funny books
bibliophile31 asked:

I am planning a Teen Read Week celebration at my school (I am the librarian). This year’s theme is “LOL at your library,” so I am looking for popular, FUNNY books for grades 5-8. Can you help me?

My almost epic summer is a great book. Also the two Chicken Soup for the ******* Soul are great. There are many short books like It’s Happy Bunny that kids love to read, but they’re not very long. Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key is very humorous and male teens love it. For the younger childern Frindle is a great book, and so it How to be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days. Being Bindy is a great book for teens also.

The only books that consistently make me laugh out loud – Calvin and Hobbes. You *do* need to see the cartoon sometimes to get the joke, but other times it is completely unnecessary. One of my favorites goes something like this:

Calvin: “Dad, where does the sun go when it sets?”
Dad: “Arizona. Somewhere near Flagstaff, actually.”
Calvin: “Doesn’t everything burn up when it sets?”
Dad: “No, because they turn it off at night. That’s why it gets dark.”
Calvin: “But doesn’t everything get crushed? I heard somewhere that the sun is really big.”
Dad: “Here, hold out a quarter at arm’s length and compare it to the sun. See? They’re both the same size.”
Calvin (afterwards): “Boy, I hope I get to be as smart as Dad someday.”

    Others that I find humorous:
..The Sword in the Stone by T H White (main character is a child)
    ..The Hobbit by Tolkien
..A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony (very suitable – chock full of puns that younger readers will immediately comprehend)
..Jack Vance’s Cugel books (contain some adult content)
