funny books
LoLo asked:

I have never been much of a reader and I would like to begin reading books. I have a hard time keeping interested, usually only get through about 5 chapters. I am looking for a comical book that will keep me interested and make me laugh. Any suggestions?

If you enjoy stories in the fairy tale or fantasy arena, or even if you don’t, I wholeheartedly recommend Terry Pratchett as an author. He is one of the few whose books regularly make me laugh out loud.

“I Like You” by Amy Sedaris.

Moon the Loon by Dougal Butler, I read this a dozen times at least, it makes me laugh out loud, which is quite embarrasing on the bus

My favourite funny books are a series by Donald Jack, called the ‘Bandy Papers’, which follows the misadventures of Bartholomew Bandy in World War I. The first book is ‘Three Cheers For Me’.
And you can’t go wrong with Mark Twain – ‘Roughing It’ and ‘A Tramp Abroad’.

Blook of Bunders by Bill Bryson

This book is an easy read as it is a collection of funny but true incidents and anecdotes. It came out in the 80′s I think so you might have to try to get hold of a second hand copy, but that shouldn’t be too hard on the internet. It’s well worth looking for. ;)

All of Emma Bomberg’s books are very homely and funny

Douglas Adams is funny. I read a book 15 years ago that still sticks in my head as one of the funniest I’ve ever read. It’s called The Lyon’s Lady by Julie Garwood.

Erma Bombeck always made me giggle….If Life is a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits? and The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank.

    Fatherhood by Bill Cosby.

Everything and a Kite by Ray Romano.

    Seinlanguage by Jerry Seinfeld.

The Spellman Files, by Lisa Lutz.

It is easy to read, and quite funny, about a family of private investigators who mostly investigate each other. The main character is a woman in her twenties, who is hilarious as she describes her ex-boyfriends and future ex-boyfriends, and her crazy family.

    DOC SAVAGE by Lester Dent

This is a series of action oriented books with a good sense of humor.

Anything by Douglas Adams will have you–literally–rolling on the floor laughing. Start with the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy. There are five books in it.

    Get it?

The series of “Adrian Mole” books, by Sue Townsend, kept me in stiches. Also an “easy read.”

The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich are pretty funny. They all have begin with a number in the title (i.e. One for the Money, etc…). Enjoy whatever you choose!

I don’t know what age level you are, but the one book that made me laugh so hard I started crying was non-fiction called “Stop Dressing Your Six Year Old Like a Skank” If you’re not an adult, it probably wouldn’t be as funny. But I LOVE that book.

It would help to know how old you are. For younger people I would recommend the Soup books by Robert Newton Peck; especially Soup and Soup in the Saddle. They are about two boys growing up during the depression and all of the scrapes they get into.

James Herriot’s books are very funny in places and sad in others. They are about a veterinarian in England in the thirties and forties. They are appropriate for all ages. All Creatures Great and Small and All Things Bright and Beautiful are the funniest.

If you are late teen to adult, Janet Evonovich’s Stephanie Plum series are funny and ****. They are about a woman who loses her job as a lingerie buyer and blackmails her sleezy cousin into giving her a job as a bounty hunter. Something she knows nothing about. The first one is One for the Money. The opening chapter of To the Nines is hysterical.
